Summary

In December 2010, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) established a Chesapeake Bay Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL) specifying the maximum amount of nutrient (nitrogen and phosphorus) and sediment loading the bay can receive and still meet water quality standards. Target TMDL nutrient and sediment loading levels, to be reached by 2025, have been established for individual state basins (major basins, divided by state boundaries), and the states have developed phase 3 watershed implementation plans (Phase III WIPs) that define the nutrient and sediment loading reduction measures they plan to implement by 2025.

This interactive map shows various data related to Chesapeake Bay nutrient and sediment loading. The map uses data (estimated loading levels) downloaded from the Chesapeake Bay Program’s CAST website in the fall of 2020. It uses 2019 Progress Scenario data, the most recent data available at the time. The map will be updated soon after 2020 Progress Scenario data is released.

For each of nitrogen, phosphorus, and sediment, the map shows the following data by land river segment (smaller geographic areas): (1) predominant loading source (sector); (2) 2019 loading; (3) 2019 % progress to full implementation of Phase III WIP loading level; and (4) loading reduction remaining to meet full implementation of Phase III WIP loading level.

In addition, for each of nitrogen, phosphorus, and sediment, the map shows the following data by state basin (larger geographic areas): (1) comparison of full implementation of Phase III WIP loading level and TMDL loading target; and (2) 2019 % progress to TMDL loading target.
